Ford has taken the cover off its much-awaited compact-SUV, the EcoSport, at the Auto Expo. The global unveiling was done by J Mays, design head of Ford worldwide. Mechanically, this new model is loosely based on the Fiesta platform and shares lot of bits with the current Fiesta saloon.
Unlike traditional compact SUVs such as the Skoda Yeti or Premier Rio which tend to look rather boxy and mundane, but with the EcoSport, the design team at Ford have done a brilliant job to mask the extra flab by giving it softer lines and a more rounded, modern design. The end result is quite impressive; this baby SUV looks good from just about every angle. The front-end, above all, is the talking point of the design. With the 'In-your-face' grille and those sleek pair of LED-headlamps; the EcoSport, unarguably, is one of the best looking cars out there. Though not as menacing as the face, the rear-end is equally impressive as well - thanks to the well-designed tail-lamps and clear, uncluttered lines that flows around the back.

The big news here is what powers this mini-SUV. With the EcoSport, Ford will also bring in an all-new turbo-charged, 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, direct-injection petrol motor. For something this small, the engine is capable of producing power similar to a bigger, 1.6-litre engine. Ford says it will also deliver class-leading fuel economy. The other engine option for the EcoSport will be a 1.5-litre Diesel unit which runs the current Fiesta saloon.

With its brilliant design, clever pair of frugal engines and a wallet-friendly price tag of somewhere around Rs7-9 lakh; the EcoSport has a lot going for it. And with no rivals in sight, the little Ford could well be the next big thing.
