Micromax has launched their first Android Tablet called 'Funbook'. Interestingly or should I say surprisingly, the tablet carries some powerful specs list and yet manages to be priced at just Rs.6,499.
To start with, it will run on the latest Android OS i.e. Ice Cream Sandwich, making it probably the cheapest tablet to offer this OS. This will be supported by a Cortex A8 1.2 Ghz processor, Dual Mail 400 - 2D/3D graphics processor and adding on to the power is 512 MB of RAM. Plus, Micromax claims the 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display (800x480p resolution) is capable of multi-touch support. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G data via a USB dongle for which Micromax is bundling a Tata Photon EVDO datacard. There's no rear camera but for video calling needs, a VGA (0.3-megapixels) front camera is built-in. Internal storage capacity is 4GB which can be extended to 32GB via a micro sd card. And wait, there's also a HDMI port to connect your Funbook to a TV. The 2800mAh battery will be the power supplier to all this.
List of pre-loaded apps include Documents on the Go, Adobe PDF, Adobe Flash, YouTube, Text Editor, etc. Micromax is also offeing e-learning apps that will have educational content from Pearson, Everon, GK Publishers, Scholarshub, Vidyalankar, Universal Tutorials, CAPS and Zion. The Funbook tablet is available in slate grey and black colours.
We wish that they had opted in for a better name considering some real good specifications have been packed in for the price tag. Calling it a Funbook makes an insult of the device. But, the real test comes in the hardware quality and overall performance the tablet will deliver. For that, we will have to wait till we get our hand-on with it.
