5 New Cars to look for in 2012

5 New Cars for 2012

Come 2012, and we will see the launch of many new cars heading for the Indian roads. The year 2012 will see an array of small cars as well as big, expensive SUV's and with Petrol prices aiming for the sky, there’s a host of diesel options headed our way too. This 5-car lot, though when launched, should be at the top of your ‘Got-to-have!’ list.

  • Audi Q3
This thing, in flesh may look like a shrunken Q5 (or Q7 for that matter, duh!) but Audi’s latest SUV has distinct personality of its own. When launched in mid-2012, this baby-SUV will be the most wallet-friendly Audi in India. We will be getting the all-wheel-drive, entry level Q3 with a 2-litre turbo Diesel under the hood. And with the prices starting at around 25-Lakh mark, mini-SUV may be just what the doctor ordered.

  • Mini Cooper
Yes! At last! The epitome of retro cool, Mini, will be here on our roads early next year. The iconic British marquee, immortalized in many Hollywood biggies like the remake of The Italian Job and the Austin Powers series, is about to enter India next year.  The modern-day Mini has a global fan following, and with India next on the map, we expect fireworks. Mini will kick start its Indian innings with the Copper hatchback first, following it will be the convertible version and also the interesting crossover ‘Countryman’
However, Good looks and Quality don’t come cheap. Expect to pay anywhere from around Rs 12Lakh for the base-spec Cooper.

  • Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster
If the SLS AMG Coupé is anything to go by, Mercedes-Benz has just unveiled the SLS AMG Roadster, which is bound to hit Merc’s Indian dealerships by the end of next year. The roadster loses the Coupé’s trademark, gullwing doors, and instead uses conventional hinges for frameless doors. Apparently, despite the added mass which is typical of convertibles (to keep the structure rigid) Weight gain has been kept down to just 40Kg more than its Coupé sibling. Performance, in keeping with the AMG tradition (lunatic that is) is expected to be mental! All thanks to its hand-built 6.2litre V8 engine churning out a staggering 562Bhp.

When? Late-2012
Under the hood: 6.2litre V8 petrol (563Bhp/66Kgm of Torque)

  • Hyundai Elantra
Ever since its launch in 2003, the Hyundai Elantra had always been struggling in the Indian market. The Korean saloon failed to strike the right cord with customers. Hyundai though, wants to change that with the latest-gen Elantra. One look at the car is all you need to appreciate its smooth flowing lines and sleek design elements managing to lend the car an aggressive look. The story is no different on the inside either. The interior design is brilliant and is far from ordinary with good quality bits all round. Engine options include a brand new 1.8-litre Diesel with 140Bhp on tap and loads of Torque. Plus a 1.8-litre Petrol motor will be there too.

What? Hyundai Elantra
When? July 2012
Under the hood:
1.8-litre Petrol (146Bhp/18.5Kgm of Torque)         1.8-litre Diesel (140Bhp/32Kgm of Torque)

  • New BMW 3-Series
The official pictures are already all over the net. The 6th generation BMW 3-Series – one of the most important new cars of the next few years, will make its public debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2012. The car should be available here by the end of 2012 and will take the fight to the likes of Mercedes-Benz C-class and Audi’s A4. The 3-Series, undoubtedly, is BMW’s bread-and-butter model. Thus, there have been quite a lot of changes made to it. The whole car itself is bigger inside out compared to the current 3-Series; the upshot to this is a roomier cabin and better comfort. The engines, sadly, are like to be carried forward from the current model. What remains to be seen now is how does this new compact saloon stack up against the competition? Time will tell.
I can’t wait!
